The Online Hybrid JD
Student Experience

Learn From Our Interactive Online Hybrid Format

The University of Dayton School of Law’s Online Hybrid Juris Doctor (JD) program is dedicated to increasing access to high-quality legal education. With our innovative online hybrid format, you will be able to continue fulfilling your professional and personal commitments while earning your JD degree.

The Online Hybrid JD program blends live online classes, real-time interactions with experienced School of Law faculty, and Get Relevant Experience and Applied Learning (Get REAL) weeks, which are on-campus experiences that occur up to 12 times throughout the program.

Online Learning

Our JD program combines the flexibility of online learning with face-to-face interactions with School of Law faculty and classmates. As a student, you will be able to access all course materials online 24/7 and use these resources to prepare for class discussions.

Our collaborative online experience features:

Readings and Resources

Prior to other coursework, you will review assigned cases and additional materials to develop background knowledge needed to understand upcoming lectures and participate in discussions.

Recorded Interactive Video Classes

You will watch and read contextual case information and learn about which legal frameworks are at play. After each recorded lecture, you will respond to a complex, open-ended question, which will be discussed in the next live session.

Recorded Discussions

You will participate in conversations using the Socratic method by watching a recording of a professor and two others discuss a particular issue. You will then evaluate their responses and answer a summary question that will be debriefed in the live session.

Live Online Sessions

You will attend face-to-face weekly classes online where you participate in collaborative discussions and review the weekly summary question and open-ended questions.

In-Person Experiences

As a student, you will be required to visit campus for Get REAL weeks. During these experiential weeks, you and your classmates will go beyond basic competency and learn to master your legal skills.

Get REAL weeks provide you with the opportunity to understand the interrelationship between different course content, talk about the policies that underlie the law and form a sense of community with your cohort. During each session, you will build on your ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world settings, including client experiences, simulations and peer engagement.

The expected cost of each Get REAL week is approximately $400–$500. You will also be responsible for the cost of travel and the hotel stay during each Get REAL week.

What is a Get REAL Week?

Over the course of the four-year program, you will visit campus up to 12 times for Get REAL weeks. This time will be spent primarily in instructional courses and completing rigorous coursework, with networking and other social events offered in the evenings.
